Justin Beiber, Lady Gaga, and Katy Perry among 2011 Grammy nominees

As mentioned yesterday the 2011 Grammy nominations were announced last night. I have to say this year the nominations are a little bit all over the place. I guess that's fitting though because this year's music has been really random too.

Alot of people are outraged over Justin Beiber being nominated but I don't think he will actually win anything. I think they nominated him as way to acknowledge the extreme hysteria he's caused for most girls ages 9 to 16. Beiber was nominated for Best New Artist along with Drake who has been a critic fave for the past two years. Both of these artists are huge but I think the real winner here is going to be Florence and the Machine because they have been in the news nonstop and they really seem to have some good music.

I'm suprised to see Katy Perry nominated for SO many things. I have her new CD, Teenage Dream and I love it to death but I'm not sure the albulm as a whole is Grammy material. The CD is very catchy and poppy but there is'nt real meaning behind most of the songs. Alot of the songs are just party material and there is no substance.

I'm also really surprised to see Lady Antebellum nominated because if I remember correctly they sang "Need You Know" at last year's ceremony. At the time the song was just about to crossover to Top 40 but it had been on country stations for awhile. Anyways I could of have sworn the song was too old to be nominated but I guess not.

Lady Gaga is nominated for Albulm of the Year which I could definitely see her winning. Last year there was a huge uproar because Lady Gaga was not nominated for Best New Artist. She was'nt nominated because the Grammy committee did'nt think she was worthy but because she was not considered to be a new artist. The Fame was released in 2008 and to be eligible for the award the artist must have released a record in the previous year, thus making Lady Gaga ineligible to be nominated for the 2010 Best New Artist Award.
Because of the controversy the Grammy committee actually changed the rules which is why Drake and Justin Beiber are eligible to be nomiated. Drake has been around for many years but just got popular in the last year or so while Justin Beiber released his debut albulm in 2009. Lady Gaga's EP, The Fame Monster has sold alot of copies and has had alot of hit singles. I definitely think she deserves to win Albulm of the Year and I really hope she does!
I'll have awhile to wait though. The Grammy Awards airs Sunday, Febuary 13, 2011 on CBS. Showtimes have yet to be determined.

10 year old to make history on Billboard's Hot 100

I think this is the evidence that the music industry has officially changed. Jackie Evancho, former America's Got Talent contestant is the highest selling debut artist on the Billboard Hot 100. She's only 10 years old. 10! I don't even remember what I was doing when I was that age. Playing dolls? But apparently Miss Evancho is a seasoned pro.

"In the fashion of Charlotte Church and Hayley Westenra, age 13 and 17 respectively; Evancho has a “classical crossover” style. Her “O Holy Night” is a four-song EP which consists of two Christmas songs and two classical pieces. “Pie Jesu” which Evancho performed on “America’s Got Talent” and “Oprah”.
The Pittsburgh native first charted last summer with “Prelude To a Dream” which peaked at #121. The independently recorded attempt was pulled. Columbia Records is now hosting the young singer."

I wish I had a record contract at 10!
